The Freedom We Get From Having The Ability To Drive Our Own Vehicle Is Immeasurable, So Why Are A Lot Of People Are Reluctant To Drive Beyond Their Own Neighbourhood
In the years since I learned to drive, I’ve driven all over the UK, and in Ireland, and travelled thousands of miles in the USA also. I recently had the idea to attempt to work out roughly what distance in total I have spent at the steering wheel and, at a very rough guess, I worked out it’s approximately four hundred thousand miles. Looking at a total like that, I have to say it’s maybe a good thing that I really enjoy driving!
I have to admit that it is a mystery to me why that so many people seem to find driving such a chore and only drive because they have no choice. I love to have the freedom of being able to get into my own vehicle and head off to anywhere I want exactly when I want to. I stop in whatever location I select for as long as I want. Why wouldn’t you want to do this?
Naturally, as with almost everything we do in life, I do realise that we all make our own choices. A lot of people like swimming – I don’t (I seriously believe that if we were still supposed to swim, our ancient forebears wouldn’t have spent eons of time evolving so that most mammals could survive on dry land), some claim that daytime television is interesting, but many do not, some worship gods or higher beings, many opt to dye their hair rather than show its real colour and some opt for Laser eye surgery so that they can avoid wearing glasses.
So I wouldn’t argue that we all have choices to make in life but with many things, like those mentioned above, we always choose our preferred course of action. For example, I don’t go to the swimming pool, or watch daytime TV, I like to colour my hair but I’m happy to wear glasses instead of paying for Laser eye surgery. But where driving is concerned, many people who dislike it still drive.
The reasons why are varied, and really quite logical – living a long way from any public transport routes, having to move heavy shopping or transport elderly or disabled relatives, having to use a car for work and so on. But surely, not really wishing to drive must mean that possibly you become a less competent driver.
I’ve been a passenger in vehicles driven by friends who cheerfully admit that they are really not comfortable when they are behind the wheel because they don’t like it. Just pulling out into a main road that nervousness is evident, and there has been more than one occasion where I’ve genuinely had to close my eyes for the duration of the journey, as I just didn’t want to see all of the things that we were just avoiding hitting. (Perhaps drivers like this should have Laser eye sensors attached to the car which produce a warning noise when they are in danger of hitting something!)
I’m not suggesting that I am a perfect driver. Nobody is, because human ability is such that even the very best at doing anything will sometimes make occasional errors of judgement. But at the same time, if you love doing something, you want to do it more, and the more you do it the more experienced and comfortable you become. It makes sense!
I know that I could become more accomplished as a driver by passing an advanced driving test, but that’s an item that never quite gets to the top of the list. And we all have days when they feel they are stressed and don’t completely concentrate as much as they should. Plus, I should probably think about having Laser eye treatment to correct my sight. My distance vision is excellent, but the displays on the dashboard are usually a little fuzzy because of my need to use reading glasses, and you really shouldn’t try putting your glasses on whilst driving to see how many miles you’ve travelled or what time it is!
Ultimately, anyone is entitled to drive a car on a public road provided they have passed the appropriate driving test, so on the day they passed at least, their driving must have rated as competent. My honest opinion is that a lot of people, once they have passed their test, never travel very far or beyond the area where they live and therefore never get the confidence to drive long distances or visit places they’ve haven’t visited before. And that, as far as I’m concerned, is why so many drivers never even start to that they can enjoy driving – they see it simply as an unavoidable means to an end, rather than the key to unlimited freedom.
